In this tutorial we will be creating a space flare glowing text in Photoshop. You will learn how to create space flare text and apply text effects to them. You will also learn how to use layer styles and blending modes in order to bring your glowing text to the next level.Lets get started applying cool glow on your text.
What you’ll be creating
So basically what will be creating is a glowing flare text effect. We will use a space scene image as a background and apply some gradients to it. Then we will be creating a multiple text layers and apply layer styles and blending modes to them.Then we will use shapes and blur to create highlight streaks. At the end we will add some visual effects to the composition and discuss possible changes in order to improve the design. You’ll need Photoshop CS2 or newer to follow this tutorial. With this we wrap up the description and lets get started.

Step 1
Create a new folder. Name it “ROCK – Create a Space Flare Glowing Text”. Now open the folder and create a new folder. Name the new folder “images”.
Step 2
Download the space image from the link in the description and place it in the images folder.
Step 3
Open Photoshop. Go to File > New to create a new file. Set the settings as in the image below. Name the File – ROCK – Create a Space Flare Glowing Text. Then click OK.
Step 4
Go to File > Save As. Make sure to save the file in the ” ROCK – Create a Space Flare Glowing Text ” folder.
Step 5
Make sure you are in Photoshop. Go to File > Place.Go in the images folder,select the space environment jpg and click Place. This will place the image on the canvas.
This is how the hierarchy of the layers look like after we place the space scene image on the canvas.
Step 6
Now create a new layer. Go to Layer > New > Layer.
Name the layer Background Gradient. Then press OK.
Step 7
Press the G key on your keyboard to activate the Gradient Tool. Open the Gradient editor and set the colors of the gradient as in the image below. Just for the record,the color on the left is (063964) and on the right is (2cc1e6).
Drag a gradient from the bottom left to the top right corner.
Set the Blending mode for the Background Gradient to be “Soft Light”. Set the opacity to 80%
Step 8
Create a new layer. Go to Layer > New > Layer ( or press CTRL+ SHIFT+N ). Name it H1 and press OK. Now press the M key on your keyboard to activate the Rectangular Marquee Tool. Make a rectangle that has 300px in width and 30px in height. Press the G key on your keyboard to activate the Gradient tool. Open the gradient editor and create a gradient as it is shown in the image below. Now drag the gradient to fill the shape.At the end press CTRL+D to deselect the shape.
Step 9
Make sure you have the H1 layer selected. Go to Filter > Blur > Gaussian Blur. Set the Radius to be 5px and press OK.
Make sure you have the H1 layer selected. Go to Filter > Blur > Motion Blur. Set the Angle to 0 and the Distance to be 350px and press OK.
Now press the M key on your keyboard to activate the Rectangular Marquee Tool. Drag a rectangle as it is shown in the image bellow. Make sure that it covers the shape almost in half. Then press the Delete key on your keyboard to delete half of the shape. That way you get a nice clean/sharp edge on the bottom, and a diffused/blurred shape on the top.
Step 10
Create a new layer. Go to Layer > New > Layer ( or press CTRL+ SHIFT+N ). Name it H2 and press OK. Now press the M key on your keyboard to activate the Rectangular Marquee Tool. Make a rectangle that has 300px in width and 60px in height. Press the G key on your keyboard to activate the Gradient tool. Open the gradient editor and create a gradient as it is shown in the image below. Now drag the gradient to fill the shape.At the end press CTRL+D to deselect the shape.
Step 11
Repeat Step 9 for H2 Layer ( make sure to do exactly the same we did for H1 layer in step 9 ).The result is show in the image bellow.
Step 12
Now lets position the H1 and H2 layer. They need to be close to each other. H1 layer will be moved more to the left and H2 more to the right. In the image below you can see how they are positioned.The 2 layers need to slightly touch but not a lot.
Step 13
Select H1 and H2 layer.Dupliacte them. The Duplicate H1 will be renamed to H3. The duplicate H2 will be renamed to H4. Now select the 2 new layers ( H3 and H4 ), and move them left and down. The H4 layers needs to overlap the H1 and H2 layer. The result can be seen in the image below.
Now select the H3 and H4 layer. Set the Blending Mode to Hard Light for both of the layers.Now you can see that the color has changed slightly.The colors have become more saturated and bright.
Step 14
Create a new layer. Go to Layer > New > Layer ( or press CTRL+ SHIFT+N ). Name it H5 and press OK. Now press the M key on your keyboard to activate the Rectangular Marquee Tool. Make a rectangle that has 300px in width and 4px in height.Set the Foreground color to be white. Press ALT+Delete to fill the shape with the white color. Then press the CTRL+D to deselect the shape.
