“Never grow up.” The quote is a testament to the unbound creativity of artists. Because of this they are able to explore and create great and wonderful things. I had the honor of being able to interview a very cool illustrator whose funny, naive, and uplifting works that call the inner child in you is an adage to the quote earlier. Fil Dunsky is a freelancing 25-year old illustrator who took it upon himself to create beautiful characters and illustrations to make this world a better place. Find out more about him and read on!
How did you start in the industry? Can you tell us more about yourself?
My parents are art family and I was always drawing something in my early childhood. Once there was a choice where to go to study a degree they suggested me to go for Fine Arts and Graphics and I’ve graduated as a graphic designer. Worked as a regular designer in the office for 2 years and while working I started to realize that design is not mine but I’ve attracted to draw again like in childhood and started to learn how to become a freelance digital illustrator.
I really like your style, how did you develop it? Can you share it with us?
Regarding the style there was two people behind who helped me to develop it. First one was my father who was always telling me not to stuck in realism and showed me Dmitry Mitrokhin sketches which opened something inside me and second was Oksana Grivina – she is really awesome illustrator and I took a lot from her style especially in the beginning and still I’m a great fan of her works.
For inspiration, can you name 3 – 5 people in the creative that you look up to.
Andrey Gordeev (Gordei), Oksana Grivina, Van Gogh.
As an artist, creative blocks are common. Do you get them? What do you do to get over them?
I had a hard period when I was learning because I had no idea how to draw and when something was going wrong it was hard to take control of my mind and keep trying. And also after about 5 years of freelancing driven by really huge passion for drawing I was bored finally. I’ve achieved all the goals I wanted e.g. to work for huge international well known clients and to get super payments and I don’t know where I would be now and what would I do if not my yoga Guru Sri Sri Ravi Shankar and this path of knowledge and practice. It helped me sooo much. It changed me completely helping to overcome any obstacles. This is my main inspiration in life now and it is number one – first do yoga and then everything else. Because when you align yourself properly, when you diving deep inside, when you get such a peace, calmness, comfort, love and something even beyond any words only then you can live really happy in any situation in life and do anything with love, sharing that love. This works so genius and yet simple. There is a breath and mind state connection in between When you feel super your breath is smooth and deep, so relaxed and when you have some negative emotions or thoughts your breath becomes shaky or incomplete or whatever. So using our breath we can have a certain control over the mind in our life. This is just a matter of practice and it works.
Among your works, which is your favorite? Why?
Thank you so much for this question. It helped me to realize something really important. I
usually ask people to choose because it is hard to be objective in this. Well same for the whole life. Anyway, maybe this one?
– because it looks like an art but not like an illustration for me. This is a personal project. I don’t know why I never tried to repeat this in other works. Maybe I should continue this way? It looks more alive and unique than other my works as I feel. (if you need, I have it in bigger resolution).
What music do you listen to for inspiration?
Last few years I use music only for some reasons. I prefer not to use it if I sit in a quiet place and nothings bothers me. Better to listen to some interesting lectures or knowledge from my yoga teacher in audio. But still if I need to shut my ears I use something positive like reggae or some nice mantra chantings or some electronics.
Most of the projects are executed clients ideas but sometimes they just say that I can draw
“something” on particular thematics. I love both ways to work. Regarding to my personal message I think it is a feeling of love and happiness in life and I’m trying 100% to put it in all my works. The way I feel I want to express and to make everyone happy. I can not draw negative. When I draw some negative emotions I feel negative too. Once I had to draw some struggle emotion and I’ve realized my face is copying that I’m drawing. And usually bad characters are also positive looking in my case. When some meat companies or smoke corporations or wine stores asking me to draw I always say no. There was a case when meat restaurant asked me to draw “something” for their advert and I draw this
And they even used it as an advert (without the words of course)!
What mistakes do you think does young graphic designers who are just starting in industry make? What advice can you give them?
Big mistake which I see everyday – they are spamming in the comments with their links asking to follow them or to check their works. This is like begin. A lot of people annoyed by this and will never open such a links. Better to write some positive comment and use attractive avatar (with your best work maybe?) for your profile. Then people will be curious and will check your profile and works. I never done such a things. I was just drawing and putting it to my blog, fb, whatever and see how many likes and comments I got. If there was many then I should will like and their friends will see. No need to ask them. I never asked for a project also. My clients are writing me by their will. Just concentrate on improving your skills and draw everyday.
Throughout your career, what are you most proud about?
I am not proud about anything. Well… Maybe only that by my regular illustrations people are
starting to think about the purpose of their lives and starting to search for themselves, starting doing yoga or some other good things and becoming happy. Only this keeps inspiring me to continue drawing. In other cases I think my works are just drawings and this is not my merit that people ask me to draw commissions but this is really big luck and I am really grateful for that.
Where do you see yourself and your works evolving in the next 5 years?
Last 5 years in interviews answering for this question I usually say that I want to draw more personal works because I have loads of commercial and that I’m dreaming to draw some personal children multimedia book someday but still I have not done it. I’m stuck in commercial. Maybe it would happen in next 5 years? I would like to draw more yoga illustrations or to work on some projects which are more connected to divine, to make people wake up more.
