Tutorial Resources

Step 1

Before you start, download all the material in one place. So it will be easier to work with them. Download resources in the best quality, using the “Download” button in the top-right corner of the page with resource on site DeviantART.com. Open Photoshop and start by creating! Create a new document. Go to File > New or the short key Cmd /Ctrl+ N. A blank document with size of 3000 pixels wide and 2000 pixels high, resolution 200 Pixels/Inch. I named the document “Queen of fungi”.

1

Step 2

Now I have added a background picture. Go to File > Place and select the image “Moss_stock_6_by_rustymermaid_stock”.

2

The picture should be opened to all Working field size. If you do not, then go to the resource page and download it as it is written in the first step.

3

Step 3

Zoom bit image, as shown in Figure. Use the Free Transform tool (Cmd /Ctrl+ T or go to Edit > Transform > Scale).

4

Step 4

Duplicate this layer one time (the short key Cmd /Ctrl+ J or go to Layer> Duplicate Layer…).

5

Now flip the duplicated image horizontally. Go to Edit> Transform> Flip Horizontal

6

7

Move not reflected horizontally (first layer background) down a bit as shown in Figure.

8

Step 5

Add a layer mask to this layer.

9

Select the Brush Tool (B) with there settings: Size: 100px, Hardness: 0%, Opacity: 100% – 50%, flow: 100%,

10

Step 6

On the layer mask partially remove the image. Carefully work through the background that was not prominent features. make it smooth. To help, here so I did. First – this is where I remove, it is the second kind of mask layer.

11

12

Step 7

Add texture to convert background. Go to File > Place and select the image “nature_bokeh_stock_by_koko_stock-d73dkvv”.

13

Transform the texture on all working fields.

14

Change the values Opacity to 75%, Blending Mode to Overlay. A similar result can be achieved and adjustment layers, but will not look so impressive and fast. Sometimes I like such surprises. Should pay attention to them!

15

Step 8

Duplicate this layer (the short key Cmd /Ctrl+ J or go to Layer> Duplicate Layer…). Increase the size and place this layer as shown in Figure. Use the Free Transform tool (Cmd /Ctrl+ T or go to Edit > Transform > Scale). This is in order to make the texture is not the same type.

16

Step 9

Now merge the layers with texture to the one group, and add to it mask.

17

Step 10

Select the Brush Tool (B) with there settings: Size: 600px, Hardness: 0%, Opacity: 100% – 50%, flow: 100%.

18

Remove some of the texture from the center (where the girl is sitting, a tree and a little close). Remove the texture on the corners of the image by changing the brush opacity to 50%,

19

Add to the bottom layer with the texture adjustment layer Curves (Layer > New Adjustment Layer > Curves… or click on icon New Adjustment Layer and in list, select Curves…).

12

Set points for each channel, as shown in Figure.

11

Step 11

Merge all layers with the background and the group with the texture in the one group “Interior” (Select the desired layers + Cmd/Ctrl + G). In the future we will return to it.

20

Step 12

Now add the mushrooms! All we have 3 types of of mushrooms, we do the rest :). Let’s start with outer of mushrooms. Go to File > Place and select the image “More_HDR_Mushrooms_10_by_Dracoart_Stock”.

21

Step 13

Reduce, rotate them and place as shown in Figure. I chose a place for them in a small clearing moss, so as to create the impression of the incident light from the general atmosphere

22

Step 14

Now use the Quick Selection Tool (W) on toolbar to select blue background and part of moss.

23

Invert selection (the short keys Cmd /Ctrl+ Shift + I). Go to Refine Edge… in the of top settings panel.

Step 15

In Refine Edge we change the view on “On Black”. Take the brush in the window and spend it outside the of mushrooms, but not much touching them (otherwise you remove part of the fungus), to remove the remains of the background. Make the settings as shown in the figure. Press Ok.

24

25

Step 16

Now add a mask to this layer to remove the entire background.

26

To mushrooms looked realistically go to his mask and using the Brush Tool (B) with there settings: Size: 100px, Hardness: 0%, Opacity: 50%, flow: 100% and remove the little foot fungus where it touches the moss (only very slightly).

25.1

Step 17

Follow the steps 12 – 16 with mushrooms “More_HDR_Mushrooms_4_by_Dracoart_Stock”.

27

28

Step 18

Duplicate this mushrooms once(Cmd/Ctrl + J). Then go to Edit > Transform > Flip Horizontal. Reduce their size (Cmd /Ctrl+ T or go to Edit > Free Transform).

31

33

Temporarily hide the layer by clicking the eye icon next to the layer.

Step 19

Now, of these two fungi, we will create a small glade. Hold Cmd/Ctrl and click on layer mask to select mushrooms. Select Lasso Tool (L) on toolbar. Hold Option/ Alt to take away from selection.

29

30

Circle high and rounded mushroom. Remaining mushroom duplicate 2 times (Cmd/Ctrl + J).

32

Step 20

Reduce mushroom and stretch it a bit wide (Cmd /Ctrl+ T or go to Edit > Free Transform) upper layer with mushroom. Place them as shown in Figure.

34

Duplicate it (Cmd/Ctrl + J) and place it as shown in Figure.

35

Go to the layer with this fungus, but that under the original layer. Using the Free Transform tool (Cmd /Ctrl+ T or go to Edit > Free Transform), Increase its size and place it as shown in Figure.

36

Step 21

We proceed to the last mushroom. Go to File > Place and select the image “HDR_Mushrooms_6_by_Dracoart_Stock”.

37

Increase mushrooms, tilt the image so that the central mushroom cap was raised, but he was in a steady position with respect to other fungi and flip them horizontally (Edit > Transform > Flip Horizontal). Place them as shown in the figure. This will be our central mushroom.

38

Use the Quick Selection Tool (W) on toolbar to select big mushroom and part of moss. Go to Refine Edge… in the top panel settings.

39

Fungus cleaning principle remains the same and not to describe it to you again just repeat the steps 15 – 16.

40

Step 22

Duplicate this mushroom 2 times (Cmd/Ctrl + J). Transform it (Cmd /Ctrl+ T or go to Edit > Free Transform) and position them as shown in the figure. Middle mushroom need to Flip Horizontal (Edit > Transform > Flip Horizontal). Layer with the small mushroom should be higher than the other two layers, so that it was closer to the viewer.

41

Here is how you should get. Layer mushroom is below all layers with mushrooms. You can arrange the mushrooms as you want. I just described how they arranged for me.

42

Merge all layers with mushrooms in a group and name it “Mushrooms” (Select the desired layers + Cmd/Ctrl + G).

43

Step 23

Add a bit of wildlife. Go to File > Place and select the image of spider “spider_png_by_camelfobia-d5ilc3s”.

44

Reduce its size and place it on mushrooms.

45

Go to File > Place and select the image of snails “snails_png_by_gd08-d3ioxq6”.

46

Take Lasso Tool (L) on toolbar. Circle first second snail and duplicate it (Cmd/Ctrl + J). Be extremely careful when allocating snails. Not to miss parts!

47

Then go back to the original snails layer and circle third snail. Then duplicate it (Cmd/Ctrl + J). Layer with the original snails I delete.

48

48

Reduce their size (Cmd /Ctrl+ T or go to Edit > Free Transform), and the second snail Flip Horizontal (Edit > Transform > Flip Horizontal). Place the snails as shown in Figure.

49

Step 24

Place the frog (File > Place. Image “frog_stock_163_by_hatestock”). Reduce the size and flip horizontally. Position it so that it look was slightly above the center.

50

Use the Quick Selection Tool (W). Circle the frog and add a mask to this layer to remove the background.

52

51

Step 25

You have to do the shadow of the animals. Create a new layer. Go to Layer > New > Layer (Cmd /Ctrl+ Shift + N). Shadow layer must be above the frog to on it shadow was created and below the layer with the snails, not much to darken their body.

53

Take a Brush Tool (B). Set there settings: Size: 75px, Hardness: 0%, Opacity: 30%, flow: 50%.

54

Now the most accurate work with the shadow, because it will depend on the result. You slowly and gently swipe the brush over the snail and mushroom simultaneously. Under the shell can be made once. Darken the side, back and legs frog. Apply shadow on mushrooms. Remember that mushrooms shadow not only of the incident light. On the lower fungi shadow from the upper fungi. The future always be attentive to such places and do not strongly contrasting shadows.

55

Merge all layers with animals in a group and name it “Bugs” (Select the desired layers + Cmd/Ctrl + G). I combine all to groups, because then it is necessary apply the adjustment layers, which should flow to animals.

Step 26

Create a new group by clicking on the icon in the group at the bottom of the Layers panel. Then add a layer mask to it. Move the group “Mushrooms” and “Bugs” in this group.

56

Take a Brush Tool (B) with there settings: Size: 70px, Hardness: 0%, Opacity: 45%, flow: 100%.

57

Remove on the layer mask a little stipe, to make it look realistic. In some places I have changed Opacity: 70% to enhance the effect.

58

Step 27

Now you need to create realistic shadows on mushrooms. To do this, create a new layer use the short keys Cmd /Ctrl+ Shift + N. Note that this layer is applied only to a group rather than to the entire document.

59

Use the Dodge Tool (O) for make light and Burn Tool (O) for shadow. Set the following settings.

60

Draw light and shade as shown in Figure. Pay attention to animals. Draw a shadow on the back of the frog and the shells so they look realistic. Shadow paint in accordance with the light from the background.

61

Step 28

When we finished with light and shadow, then you have to adjust the saturation of all fungi, to make it look authentic and natural. We will add two adjustment layers. The first is Curves to give a correct saturation and gamma. Go to Layer > New Adjustment Layer > Curves… or icon New Adjustment Layer > Curves…

62

Second adjustment layer is Hue/Saturation. It needed to do a bit of dark color that closer to reality.

63

Here I have made such mushrooms. Not much darken them and do not do much hard light and dark tones. Otherwise, your work will not look realistic and too overexposed. I combined all the adjustment layers with groups into one group and named it “mushrooms and bugs”.

64

Step 29

Now add some spider webs. For this I used a brushes “Spider_Webs_1_by_frozenstocks”. If you do not know how to load them, you can see it in my other tutorials, or use the search :). I have three different layers with different spider webs in different places.

65

Let’s start with the bottom layer! Create a new layer and take a Brush Tool (B). Brush name “Spider_web_5” Size: 400px, Opacity: 100%. Color to all webs – #cacaca. I specifically took not white, because that will look more natural. Place the web of between mushrooms, but that the center was in the middle. Also make sure that the edges of the web concerned fungi.

66

Second layer. Brush name “Spider_web_11” (Blue), “Spider_web_12” (Red), Size: 300px.

67

Third layer. Brush name “Spider_web_4” (Blue), Size: 256px.

68

But last web need a little change. Go to Brush Presets and change the settings as shown in Figure. Brush name “Spider_web_3” (Blue), Size: 200px. Because the web on different layers, created volume and light game.

69

Step 30

Now let’s pay attention to the model! And add it to start :). Go to File > Place. Image “Little_Witch_3_by_deathbycanon_stock”. Place the model in the center of the image on a piece of wood. Reduce its size little.

70

Use the Quick Selection Tool (W) to select a model. Be sure to circle and every part of dresses and hats. Do not worry that background emerges through the fabric pattern, then we remove it. When you select a model, go to Refine Edge…

71

Step 31

In this window, change the view of the “On White”. Be sure to check the box for “Smart Radius”, set Radius 1.0px. There is an icon on the left brush, take this brush and start painting on fabric where rayed background. Several times on one carry and you will be able to partially restore the fabric, but it’s not much wash, otherwise the form will be unattractive. Just swipe it where there are remnants of the background.

72

Add to that the layer mask and you remove all unnecessary background. It should you get.

73

Step 32

Create the shadow of the kettle and girl. To do this create a New Layer (Cmd/Ctrl+ Shift + N) and place it under the layer with the model.

74

Take a Brush Tool (B) and set there settings: Size: 900px, Hardness: 0%, Opacity: 40%, flow: 100%. Make shadow. Near of the kettle the shadow will be more, and the edges of model dress less.

75

Step 33

Now we need to make the right lighting model to fit her into the general atmosphere. Create a new layer use the short keys Cmd /Ctrl+ Shift + N.

59[1]

Use the Dodge Tool (O) for make light and Burn Tool (O) for shadow. Draw light and shade as shown in Figure. Note that I lightens it as out of the kettle is light. For example, a hand with a magic wand, edge of hat, neck and edge of kettle. This layer should be higher than the model layer. All the layers of the model I have combined into one group “Model”.

76

77

Step 34

Now the fun part! Now we will create a brush from the stars. In Photoshop are many brushes that few know (except for professionals). Now you find them and convert it! Go to Brush Presets. In the upper right corner there is an icon settings, click on it and then select the “Assorted Brushes”. In the window that appears, if you click Ok brush replaced, and if Append then brushes added to the Brush palette.

78

Now find a star brush in tab “Brush”. Set on the main tab Size: 40px, Spacing: 32%. So the stars are not so thick, which would make dispersal. Go to tab “Shape Dynamics” and set Size Jitter: 83%, Angle Jitter: 13%, Roundness Jitter: 56%, Minimum Roundness: 25%. This values represents the minimum size of the stars, slightly tilted and perspective stars.

79

Go to Scattering tab and set Scatter: 1000%, Count: 1. This parameter is responsible for the the scatter stars.

81

Tab Color Dynamics responsible for the color of the brush and change it. Set the Hue Jitter: 29%, Saturation Jitter: 16%, Brightness Jitter: 2%. So the stars will be a different color, brightness and saturation. In tab Transfer set Opacity Jitter: 70%, Flow Jitter: 89%. So the star will not be the same. This creates an effect of depth. Be sure to check the box on Smoothing to change stars color and “blended with the background”.

80

Save your created brush to return to it after.

81.1

Step 35

Brush is ready. Start working on the kettle and the stars. First you need to circle around the top of the kettle. Take a Magnetic Lasso Tool (L) and carefully circle the edge of the kettle. Create a new layer (Cmd /Ctrl+ Shift + N).

82

83

Take a Brush Tool (B) (Size: 600px, Hardness: 0%, Opacity: 100%, flow: 100%, Color – # 00bffc). Edge of the brush to make a point to create a small glow in the kettle. I added a layer mask and used a brush a little removed from the kettle.

84

To this layer set Opacity: 65%, Blend Mode: Linear Dodge (Add).

85

Create a new layer. Reduce the size of the brush (Size: 500px) and put a point as shown in Figure.

86

Set Opacity: 70%, Blend Mode: Screen. Now you can deselect (Cmd/Ctrl + D).

87

Step 36

Now create a new layer and place it the top. Change Blend Mode to Color, Opacity: 55%.

88

Take a Brush Tool (B) (Size: 125px, Hardness: 0%, Opacity: 100%, flow: 100%, Color – # 00bffc). Draw glow from the kettle to a model, on kettle edge and fabric. Try not to draw on the model’s face, because it is not very nice.

89

Create a New Layer. Take a Brush Tool (Size: 100px, Hardness: 0%, Opacity: 30%, flow: 100%, Color – # 00bffc), make small steam eruption. Opacity to this layer – 58%.

90

Note the location of the layers! You should be too.

91

Step 37

We proceed to the stars. Create a New Layer. Select your star brush. Settings Size: 25 and 15px, Hardness: 0%, Opacity: 100%, flow: 100%, Color – # 00bffc. In the settings of the brush uncheck “Color Dynamics” to draw only one color. This layer must be above the layer with “Linear Dodge (Add)”.

92

Create a New Layer. Brush Settings: Size: 30px, Hardness: 0%, Opacity: 100%, flow: 100%, Color – # ffbb03. In the settings of the brush turn “Color Dynamics” to become stars with different colors and shades. Opacity to this layer – 40%. Each subsequent layer to be under previous.

93

Now we give the stars neon effect. For this layer add a style Inner Glow… and Outer Glow… Make the settings for each as shown in Figure.

94

This style makes the outer glow. So you can make the effect of light or energy from object.

95

This style makes the inner glow. This gives the effect of neon stars and makes them view the baby and toy.

96

Create a New Layer. Brush Settings: Size: 40px, Hardness: 0%, Opacity: 100%, flow: 100%, Color – # ffbb03. Opacity to this layer – 100%. Duplicate the layer style from the previous.

97

Step 39

Create a New Layer. Brush Settings: Size: 15px, Hardness: 0%, Opacity: 100%, flow: 100%, Color – # ffe000. Opacity to this layer – 75%. I decided to add gold stars and textured. For this layer add a style Bevel & Emboss… Color Overlay… Outer Glow… Make the settings as shown in Figure.

98

Bevel & Emboss… This gives the texture of the stars.

99

Color Overlay… colors in the color you want.

100

101

Step 40

Remained the last layer. It is the latest and contains smoke. Create a new layer and load in Photoshop smoke brushes. Try different brush. Here are some basic brushes, which I used. Set Opacity to this layer 45%.

102

114

I combined all the layers with the glow of the stars and in the same group and named it “Star”. Check the location of all the layers. You must be in the same way as me.

104

Step 41

Now let’s add bokeh to the picture to make the atmosphere more colorful and magical. Go to File> Place and select file “Light_texture_05_by_xnienke”.

115

Reduce the image and duplicate it 2 times, place two images on the top and one near the fungi. I added to layers with bokeh in group “Interior” layer mask and removed the water mark.

117

116

All three layers are of different sizes, opacity and Blending modes. On the right side is smaller than on the left. Near the fungus – smallest. Try to make the size of bokeh proportional.

105

Step 42

The next step is to create a blurred background. Select a groups with the background, mushrooms and animals and layer with bokeh. Duplicate them (Cmd/Ctrl+ J). Combine doubles in a single layer (Cmd/Ctrl+ E).

106

Go to Filter > Blur > Gaussian Blur… Set the radius 3.0px.

107

On blurred layer add a layer mask, used a soft brush to remove the blur from center, animals and fungi edges. Dark part of the frog leave blurred.

108

Step 43

I created a brush to paint a small cloud of particles near the mushrooms. Original brush was a soft brush. Save a Brush.

109

110

Create a new layer uppermost. Take your brush and draw near the small mushroom cloud. Set Opacity 80%.

111

That they add to the glow layer style Outer Glow with the settings as shown in Figure.

112

Step 44

All done! I congratulate you! I hope you learned a lot and you were a pleasure to read and learn my tutorial. Here is ready to work with all layers. Check it out!
