In this tutorial I’ll show you how to create an anti-alcohol concept artwork using a range of photo manipulation techniques. You’ll work with blending, masking, image extraction, lighting, coloring and more.

What you’ll be creating

We’ll start this tutorial by setting up a scene from the sky, ground and stair images. Then we’ll add the model and do some retouch on her. Later we’ll use the smoke image to build up a dark and mysterious atmosphere. After making the blood we’ll use some adjustment layers to enhance the color and contrast of the whole pic. Then we’ll take care of the lighting and create a special effect for the “gate of hell” with a few adjustment layers, brush and nebula texture. We’ll use an adjustment layer to enhance the final result. You should use Photoshop CS3 or newer to follow this tutorial properly.

Tutorial Resources

Step 1

Create a new document in Photoshop with the following settings:

drunk1[4]

Step 2

Open the sky stock. Use the Move Tool (V) to drag the sky into our white canvas:

drunk2[4]

To darken the sky, I used an adjustment layer. Go to Layer > New Adjustment Layer > Curves:

drunk2a[4]

drunk2b[4]

Step 3

Open the ground image. Place it at the bottom of our main document using the Move Tool, also use the Cmd/Ctrl+T key to transform it as shown below:

drunk3[4]

You can see that I’ve rotated the ground to get a lean angle to fit this tutorial concept.

Click the second button at the bottom of the Layers Panel to add a mask to this layer. Use a basic, soft brush with black color to soften the edge of this ground:

drunk3a[4]

Step 4

To darken the ground, I used a Curves adjustment layer with Clipping Mask:

drunk4[4]

On this layer mask use a soft black brush with the opacity and flow about 20% to erase the left of this ground (we aim to add a light source there, see in next steps).

drunk4a[4]

Step 5

Open the gate and stair image and isolate it from the background:

drunk5[4]

Step 6

To remove some of the unwanted details on the stair, make a new layer and active the Clone Tool (S):

drunk6[4]

Use this tool to delete the indicated details :

drunk6a[4]

Step 7

Hide the background layer by clicking its eye icon. Press Cmd/Ctrl+Option/Alt+Shift+E to merge the extracted stair and the clone layers. Use the Move Tool to drag it into our main image, position it at the left:

drunk7[4]

Add a mask to this layer. Use a soft black brush to remove the edges of the stair as shown below:

drunk7a[4]

Step 8

I used Curves (Clipping Mask) to darken the stair:

drunk8[4]

drunk8a[4]

Step 9

Cut out the model from the background and place her at the right of the ground, remember to rotate her to fit the angle of the ground:

drunk9[4]

Step 10

Make a new layer above the model one, change the mode to Overlay 100% and fill with 50% gray:

drunk10[4]

Use the Dodge and Burn Tool (O) with Midtones Ranges, Exposure about 15-20% to refine the contrast on the model face. You can see how I did it with Normal mode and the result with Overlay mode:

drunk10a[4]

Step 11

Copy the cap and blood from the original image and position them beside the model:

drunk11[4]

Step 12

Make a new layer under the model one. Use a soft black brush with the opacity varied from 40% to 70% to paint the shadow under the model and the cap.

drunk12[4]

Step 13

Make the model, shadow, cap, blood layers selected then press Cmd/Ctrl+G to create a group for them. Change the mode of this group from Pass Through (default group mode) to Normal 100%. On the top of the layers within this group, make a Curves adjustment layer to darken the model and the relevant details:

drunk13[4]

On this layer mask use a soft black brush to reduce the darkness on some parts shown below:

drunk13a[4]

Step 14

I used Hue/Saturation to reduce the saturation of the layers in this group:

drunk14[4]

drunk14a[4]

Step 15

Create a Curves adjustment layer to increase the lightness on the model a bit:

drunk15[4]

On this Curves layer mask use a soft black brush to erase the parts we don’t want to be affected by this adjustment layer:

drunk15a[6]

drunk15a[7]

Step 16

Open the smoke image (feel free to use your own). Choose Channels in the Layers Panel then right click Red, choose Duplicate Channel:

drunk16[4]

On Red channel copy, press Cmd/Ctrl+L to open the Levels window. Change the shadows and highlight value to get a stronger contrast:

drunk16a[4]

Here is the result:

drunk16b[4]

Press Cmd/Ctrl+Option/Alt+6 to load the smoke selection:

drunk16c[4]

Select the RGB channel, right click the selection and choose Layer via Copy. We have the smoke on a new layer:

drunk16d[4]

Step 17

Put the extracted smoke over our working image and flip it horizontally by clicking Edit > Transform > Flip Horizontal:

drunk17[4]

Add a mask to this layer and use a soft black brush to reduce the smoke intensity and make other details visible:

drunk17a[4]

Step 18

I used Curves to darken this effect:

drunk18[4]

Apply masking on this Curves layer mask using a soft black brush with a very low opacity (10-15%):

drunk18a[4]

drunk18b[4]

Step 19

Extract the blood from its background then use the Lasso Tool (V) to choose a blood trail. Place it beside the model mouth and tweak it using the Warp Tool (Edit > Transform > Warp):

drunk19[4]

drunk19a[4]

Step 20

Add a mask to this layer and use a soft black brush to blend the blood with the model lips corner and the blood on the ground:

drunk20[4]

Step 21

I used Curves to darken this blood:

drunk21[4]

Step 22

Create a Curves adjustment layer on the top of all layers to darken the whole scene:

drunk22[4]

On this layer mask use a soft black brush to erase the gate as we’ll be adding some light to it later:

drunk22a[4]

Step 23

Use Color Balance to give the scene some magenta tone:

drunk23[4]

drunk23a[4]

Step 24

I used a Photo Filter adjustment layer to add some cyan to the scene:

drunk24[4]

drunk24a[4]

Step 25

Continue coloring the picture with a Color Fill layer (Layer > New Fill Layer > Solid Color):

drunk25[4]

Change the mode of this layer to Exclusion 40%:

drunk25a[4]

Step 26

I used another Color Balance adjustment for this picture:

drunk26[4]

drunk26a[4]

Step 27

I used a Vibrance adjustment to boost the color:

drunk27[4]

On this layer mask use a soft black brush with a very low opacity (20%) to reduce the redness on the model face:

drunk27a[4]

Step 28

To reduce the redness more I used Hue/Saturation and change the Red settings only:

drunk28[4]

drunk28a[4]

Step 29

Since this step we’ll take care of the gate and stair. On the top of all layers use the Lasso Tool to create a selection around the gate, set the feather for it to 70 (depends on your picture size):

drunk29[4]

Go to Layer >New Adjustment Layer > Channel Mixer:

drunk29a[4]

drunk29b[4]

Now on the Channel Mixer layer mask use a soft black brush to refine the red light, make it flow along the stair from the gate. Here is my result on the mask and on the picture:

drunk29c[4]

drunk29d[4]

Step 30

Apply the same technique on a new Curves adjustment layer as I wanted to brighten the red effect:

drunk30[4]

drunk30a[4]

Step 31

Create a new layer on the top. Use a soft brush with the color #af696c to paint on the gate area. change the mode of this layer to Hard Light 100%:

drunk31[4]

Step 32

On a new layer use the same brush to paint again on the top of the gate but set the mode to Overlay 100%:

drunk32[4]

Step 33

I used a new layer and a soft white brush with the opacity about 40% to brighten the red light. Change this layer mode to Overlay 100%:

drunk33[4]

Step 34

Open the nebula image. To give it more “fiery” effect, I duplicated this layer and used the Liquify Tool to bend it. Go to Filter > Liquify and choose the Forward Warp Tool:

drunk34[4]

Use this tool to tweak the nebula in the way you want. Here is my result:

drunk34a[4]

Step 35

Drag the result onto the gate after resizing it down and change the mode to Overlay 100%:

drunk35[4]

To remove the dark edges of this nebula image, double click this layer, choose Blending Options. Hold down the Alt/Option key while dragging the black slider of This Layer until most of the dark edges disappear:

drunk35a[4]

drunk35b[4]

Step 36

Add a mask to this layer and use a soft black brush to remove the remained edges:

drunk36[4]

Step 37

I used Hue/Saturation to change the color of this effect:

drunk37[4]

drunk37a[4]

Step 38

To make the effect more visible I used a Levels adjustment:

drunk38[4]

On this Levels layer mask use a soft black brush to reduce the visibility on a part of the effect:

drunk38a[4]

Step 39

I used Vibrance to enhance the final effect:

drunk39[4]

On this layer mask use a soft black brush to reduce the redness on the raising hand of the model:

drunk39a[4]
